Monopoly Guy

Have you ever wondered...

What's the name of the Monopoly Guy?

Well, you're not alone. Monopoly is the most popular board game in the world and millions of people have played it but most refer to the Monopoly Guy as well... The Monopoly Guy.

Since 1999, during a marketing effort by Hasbro he was officially renamed Mr. Monopoly. But the character first started appearing on Chance and Community Chest cards way back in 1936. Back then he went by the name of Rich Uncle Pennybags.

Back in 1988, when The MONOPOLY Companion: The Players' Guide was published, it was stated that his full name is Milburn Pennybags.

So there you have it. Next time you're playing Monopoly and someone wonders what's the name of the Monopoly Guy, now you've got a few factoids to share.

Monopoly Movie

As a big fan of the board game Monopoly, I don't know how I feel about the upcoming Monopoly Movie. If you haven't heard yet, Ridley Scott has been slated to direct a motion picture based on the game Monopoly.

If you're like me, you're probably asking, "How can they make a movie out of a board game?" Well at this point details are scarce but it seems that it's going to somehow be related to our struggling economy. I guess I can see how mortgaging New York Avenue might somehow be like all the foreclosures that are taking place around the country. But really is that enough to fill the big screen for about two hours?

Ridley Scott has directed Gladiator and Blade Runner so I think he should stick to the action format. How about the stars of the movie racing around Atlantic City in a race car, trying to avoid going to jail all the while a mega tycoon type is buying up the strip to try to stop them. Hmmm, sounds pretty weak actually.

Well good luck to this movie but I'm not sold on the idea yet.

iPhone Monopoly

For all of you Monopoly lovers out there who have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, Electronic Arts has just recently released Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition at the iTunes App Store.

Playing the iPhone version of the most popular board game of all time is pretty much what you'd expect. You still play by the same rules and the gameplay is the same as well. This is not a dumbed down version like Monopoly JR or something, this is the real game. And they've added some nice animations to the mix. You have to actually shake your iPod Touch or iPhone in order to roll the dice.

The one thing that seems to bother a lot of people is that they decided to go with Here and Now Version of the gameboard and not the original Atlantic City version. Perhaps that can be addressed in a future update but as of right now, it's Here and Now or nothing.

And for those who think it might be a little weird playing Monopoly all by yourself there's some options for multiplayer mode. There's the Pass and Go option, which consists of passing the iPhone to the other players when it's there turn and the much cooler option of WiFi enabled play.

The game was originally $7.99 but has come down in price since then. At the time of this post it was priced at $4.99 and I think it's a great bargain at that price.
